Look at them.

They won’t bite. And even if they will, you should be far enough away from them that you’ll have a head start for the exit. Looking directly at the audience as you begin also sends a statement that says, “I’m not afraid of you.” It lets the audience know that you see them and that you’re interested in establishing a dialogue with them. If you look at them and smile, you may have won additional “warmth” points for yourself. And you will feel better about them—just as they will feel better about you.
