Rule 35. Think ‘Free Running’
The diagrams illustrate the designer’s job: to use the four-stage design process to squeeze the outdoor climate – the thick black line – into the indoor comfort zone – the green box. Imagine a ‘free running’ building, one totally unplugged and without any energy inputs: it will gradually settle into a direct response to the external conditions. A well-designed building will provide conditions close to the indoor comfort zone for most or all of the year even when it is free running.
