Be the Connector

When I worked in the digital media industry, especially when I was the vice president of the International Interactive Communications Society (IICS), then the leading association in digital media, I made it my business to build a robust database of contacts. My prowess was not on the technical side; it was in connecting people. It got to the point where people would say, “Chaz knows everybody.” I didn't, of course, but that was the perception.

The more you build your database, the more details you know about the people who inhabit it, the greater the chances of you connecting them with each other. And the more connections you make, the greater your value. You become a resource, a “go-to” person. You may not know everyone, ...
