In times past, education was primarily focused on learning the important content for each subject area, then assessing this content knowledge with quizzes and tests at the end of a lesson. So in science, for instance, a student might first study the periodic table of elements, then take a test on what H, Na, Cl, Fe (hydrogen, sodium, chlorine, and iron) and other element symbols stand for, how they are arranged in the table, and other related information.
