Today we review inter-VLAN routing. Because Layer 2 switches cannot perform the routing function, it is necessary to implement a Layer 3 device to route between VLANs.

Inter-VLAN Routing Concepts

Inter-VLAN communications cannot occur without a Layer 3 device. Three options are available when implementing inter-VLAN routing:

  • Traditional or legacy inter-VLAN routing

  • Router on a stick

  • Multilayer switching
