Today we review two overlay network technologies: Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) and Internet Protocol Security (IPsec). An overlay network is a virtual network that is built on top of an underlay network. The underlay is a traditional network, which provides connectivity between network devices such as routers and switches.
