3.5. Future Directions
Despite the great progress in biomaterial development for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, relatively few research endeavors have been devoted to the development of biomaterials for bioprinting processes; the majority of biomaterial researchers do not consider refinement of their biomaterials for use in the domain of bioprinting. Therefore, further effort should be devoted to engineering new bioprintable materials. A new field of study in the design and development of novel bioink materials is likely to emerge in the near future. To develop such bioink materials, compatible bioprinting processes should be first identified as each bioprinting modality possesses different requirements for the bioink materials. ...
