3.5. Future Directions

Despite the great progress in biomaterial development for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, relatively few research endeavors have been devoted to the development of biomaterials for bioprinting processes; the majority of biomaterial researchers do not consider refinement of their biomaterials for use in the domain of bioprinting. Therefore, further effort should be devoted to engineering new bioprintable materials. A new field of study in the design and development of novel bioink materials is likely to emerge in the near future.
