IN THIS CHAPTER WE’LL DISCUSS how to print models that have been checked for printability and are ready to go. We’ll cover the 3D printing process, features of consumer-level printers, slicer software, and troubleshooting. We’ll also look at printing with a service bureau.
3D printing encompasses the different ways a physical model is built from a digital one. The .stl or other printable format file is a mesh inside an invisible shell. That mesh consists of hundreds or thousands of polygons and their X, Y, Z coordinates. The printer uses that information to create the physical model layer by layer. This is called additive manufacturing, meaning that material is added to create the item.
