The electronics and firmware running a modern desktop 3D printer represent thousands of man-hours of open-source development and refinement to achieve an operational machine. In this chapter, I walk you through some of the history of common RepRap-based electronics, have you look at the firmware Marlin 2.0 used to drive the electronics, and explain how everything comes together to make a 3D printer. I also guide you through wiring, upgrades, and optional parts, along with the sensors and motors that provide for the all-important thermoplastic extrusion and mechanical movement.
