CHAPTER 6

Creativity and Innovation

An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail.

—Edwin Land

Business is difficult. But it could be approached two ways: Seriously, or with the same way you’re doing your job, with entertainment aspect, with pleasure, with fun. And we decided to try to make it as fun that we do our creativity.

—Guy Laliberté, creator of Cirque du Soleil

Teams use creativity to do much more than just solve problems. They tap into this resource to generate new products, services, and solutions that many didn’t even realize they needed. For instance, the advent of the iPhone came as the consequence of the fact that people wanted a better phone that did more for them. This desire for improvement resulted in the wildly successful App Store, which did more than simply bring a new product into consumers’ lives: It changed the culture and the very way that people used their phones. The app market hadn’t even existed prior to this; but thanks to creativity, an entirely new consumer space was created—one that is now supported by thousands of developers and millions of users.

These team-building games focus on the process of creating something out of nothing. They encourage team members to generate new ideas and show them how to take a few simple goals and rules and hopefully produce magic. These games help hone the skills of improvisation, building on other people’s ideas and coming up with new ways of thinking that can result in amazing solutions.
