Chapter 6

NR Waveform

Abstract

5G New Radio (NR) will operate in sub-1 GHz to 100 GHz carrier-frequency range under different types of deployments to support various human-centric and machine-centric applications. The 3GPP has adopted a scalable OFDM waveform for NR. This chapter explains important concepts behind the adoption of OFDM and its numerology design for NR. Different factors involved in the implementation of NR modems are discussed in detail. The chapter puts special focus on high carrier frequencies (e.g., the millimeter-wave band), where robustness to hardware impairments (phase noise, synchronization errors) and the power efficiency of the waveform is crucial.
