17.1 Introduction

Following the 5G introduction in Release 15, there have been several improvements to boost the 5G radio performance. This chapter will address the improvements for coverage, MIMO operation, UE power saving, as well as improvements with dual connectivity and carrier aggregation. Further, the steps in mobility improvements are addressed along with artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) for the air interface and integrated access and backhaul. The XR-Related radio improvements were addressed in Chapter 16.

17.2 Coverage Enhancements

The importance of coverage is continuously recognized in 3GPP, and following the introduction of 5G, especially the 3.5 GHz bands, and in some cases even higher bands, emphasizes the its importance when compared to the long term evolution (LTE) coverage. In the first phase, 5G device coverage was impacted by the 5G-LTE dual connectivity as the LTE anchor carrier took the power it needed and only what was left was available for the 5G uplink. In the early phase, the issue was even more severe as the power was not dynamically shared but had to be configured in slower fashion to ...
