18.1 Introduction

One of the key targets in 5G network design is to support wireless connectivity for industrial use cases. 5G can help make the industry 4.0 vision a reality, where digitalization and automation are utilized for resource sourcing, manufacturing, and transportation. 3GPP Release 15 provides a baseline for high-performance radio in terms of high data rates, extreme capacity, and low latency. Further, 3GPP evolution in Releases 16–18 provides the complete set of features required to support different industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Figure 18.1 shows a summary of the key industrial IoT features in 3GPP Releases 16–18. Those features are discussed in more detail in this chapter.
