Consider the Context Carefully

In addition to analyzing specific listeners, you will have to devote some attention to the specific context in which you speak.

Context is the weaving together of words or parts of a discussion that surround a word or passage that can throw light on its meaning. Context is also the interrelated conditions in which your speaking occurs.

Context includes such factors as:

people involved

timing

preceding and following events

communications climate

location

distracting noise and activity

the situation

the occasion

seating arrangement

related information

listeners

expectations of listeners

previous knowledge
