TOWARD MASTERY

I’m uncomfortable with the word “mastery” in the same way some are uncomfortable with calling themselves an artist. The word itself implies a pinnacle, and I get nervous about heights these days. But as an artist and a human being, I hope all the same that I’m on a journey towards mastery of the tools of my craft, and of my own life. Whether I get there is, I think, a matter of perspective, but it’s not what matters most to me. It’s the journey that matters. There may not even be a destination.

I do not practice Zen, but I see something beautiful in Zen teaching, particularly where that teaching offers wisdom about living in the present and learning to see. There’s a word used in Zen teaching: shoshin. It means “beginners mind” ...
