10 Naming

It is important to give every bone in your rig a descriptive name so that when you read it you know what the bone’s purpose is. For example, “DEF-neckLower” reveals that the bone is a deformation bone for the lower part of the neck. If it was called “Bone.046.” instead, things would not be that clear. Naming bones is also necessary for some tools to work properly, as discussed in the “Side identifier” section. Although it may be tedious to name every bone, it will save time and confusion in the long run.

Before discussing naming tools and conventions, it is important to know where to find bone names in Blender. We can access this information in several places (see Figure 10.1):
