Introduction

We can transfer weights between different meshes based on proximity and topology. This can save hours of work and sometimes help achieve results that would be hard or even impossible to get by manual weight painting.

Many studios reuse body meshes, which either have the weights already stored on them or weights are later transferred to them using a reference mesh that contains final weights. So someone can paint body weights once for the entire project. Another common use case for weight transfers is to create weights for a character’s clothing. Transferring is also useful for solving some tricky jobs like painting thin geometry shells like wings.
