The goal of this chapter is to provide a “how to” guide for using rigs for animation, and to make you familiar with some animation-related concepts and tools that are worth knowing.

Linking and Library Overrides

Consider the rig file and animation files to be two separate entities. Connect the rig to animation files through linking. What is crucial here is that a linked rig is not a duplicate of the original, it just points to it in the rig file. So any updates made to the rig file will automatically be available in the animation files.

To link a rig and create an animation file, follow these steps:

  • In Blender, click on File > New to create a blank file.
