When I ask Thomas Frieden, MD, why he does what he does, he pauses for a moment, genuinely surprised by the question. Then he responds with a question of his own: “It is Sutton's Law: ‘Why did you rob banks?’ ‘That is where the money is.’” The money, for Tom, is helping save the most lives possible. And he is determined to earn it.
Since 2009, Tom has been the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He found his calling in helping others when, on behalf of the CDC, he took on the tuberculosis epidemic in New York in the early 1990s.
