3Quality in Design

We begin this chapter with the description of the “product creation cycle” to show where the topics of discussion in this chapter fit within the activities that take place in various phases of the product creation cycle. Then we present the quality-related activities in the design phase, also known as the quality planning phase, of the cycle. Specifically, we will discuss customer surveys, quality function deployment (QFD), principles of reliability, design of experiments for product/process parameter selection, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and principles of choosing tolerances, which are all part of the effort in designing quality into a product.
