Preface to the First Edition

In the 20-plus years that I have been teaching classes in quality methods for engineering majors, my objective has been to provide students with the knowledge and training that a typical quality manager would want of new recruits in his or her department. Most quality managers would agree that a quality engineer should have a good understanding of the important statistical tools for analyzing and resolving quality problems. They would also agree that the engineer should have a good grasp of management methods, such as those necessary for finding the needs of customers, organizing a quality system, and training and motivating people to participate in quality efforts.
