This chapter describes the overall framework and core concepts employed in managing projects. Most of the framework derives from the Project Management Institute (PMI) standard. In some cases, I alter the presentation slightly to improve understanding to those outside the discipline. I also incorporate other standards or perspectives where appropriate.
I begin this chapter with a discussion regarding the basic concepts rooted in all projects: that they involve work. Understanding work and its relationship to projects helps us develop a comprehensive framework for project management.
