1. Introduction

This chapter presents an introduction into what is commonly approached as ‘international economics’. This term reflects the special conditions of the late 19th and the 20th century when governments of nation states emerged as central actors in national economies and adopted a powerful role in shaping the institutions of economic relations between those nation states.
