So, how does one assess one’s life? You could look at success as something you worked hard to achieve. You could say you deserved good fortune. At various times in my life, I felt both entitled and deserving.

Those are the feelings of the young, formed at a time when there’s no sunset ahead and boundless open roads to travel. My great ah-ha moment came when a cataclysmic event nearly took my life. I learned that, indeed, there is an open road for us all to travel. However, the road is not straight—it’s full of hazards, turns and many stop signs.

My journey in photography has run parallel to my life’s journey . . . at times intersecting and at times diverging. Balancing the two can be immensely difficult for a committed photographer. ...
