Planning is at the core of good project management. Competent and accurate planning does not happen by accident: it is developed by learning from experience, using the right techniques at the right time to develop the required information and then acting upon that information.

The plan evolves – or, more accurately, plans evolve as there is usually more than one of them – through a number of steps. Planning itself is not guesswork; rather, it is the systematic calculation of the time activities will take, how much they will cost and when they will be delivered.
