A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO STAGE LIGHTING
electric beams should adequately overlap, and the
second zone focus points’ placement should be cor-
rect. If the upstage edge of channel 3 isn’t reaching
the designer’s eyes, the second zone focus points may
need to shift downstage, or the top cuts in the first
zone instruments may need to be opened up to retain
an up- and downstage blend between the two zones.
After the focus of 1 Electric #9 has been completed,
the combined beams of the two centerline instru-
ments, channels 3 and 7, should result in a blended
frontlight system between the two zones. The same
double-check should be performed between channels
7 and 9 before the entire second electric frontlight
system is focused as well.
Figure 12.25 shows channels 6 > 10 after the 10
instruments have been pointed. The offstage instru-
ments in channels 6, 8, and 10 will require side cuts
to keep light off the black masking legs. Channels 9
and 10 will require top cuts to eliminate unwanted
portions of the beams from the black scrim.
Figure 12.26 shows channels 6 > 10 after the
shutter cuts have been executed. To achieve side-to-
side blending, the barrels are all medium soft. Though
these diagrams show all of the instruments pointed,
and then shuttered in two separate steps, each instru-
ment will be shuttered after it’s been pointed dur-
ing the actual focus. The focus of the second and
third zones of pink straight frontlight is now com-
plete. Group 1 can be activated to check the overall
focus and blend of the entire pink straight frontlight
system.
Overhead Sidelight Focus
The Hokey light plot has two pipe end systems, col-
ored in Roscolux 51 and 64. Although a templated
instrument can be seen adjacent to the pair, its focus
will be different. The focus of the two pipe end
systems will be discussed first.
Figure 12.27 shows the instruments and the
focus points for channels 25 > 28, controlling the sec-
ond instruments on the first, second, fourth, and fifth
electrics. Colored in Roscolux 51, they’ll be focused
as the stage left lavender pipe end system for Hokey.
