Stimulus Characteristics of the TAT Cards
In order to interpret protective material, it is essential to be able to disentangle what is projective from what is an accurate description of the stimulus. Some degree of familiarity with what is typically described by subjects on particular TAT cards is, therefore, quite helpful to the practicing clinician. As Zubin (1949) stated, “It is clear that … the stimulus itself needs much more clarification before we can differentiate that which inheres in the stimulus from that which inheres in the responder himself” (p. 18). It is strongly recommended that the aspiring clinician become acquainted with what is known about the TAT card stimulus characteristics.
