Diagrams are generally illustration driven and designed to dissect, the parts of an object or chronicle a chain of events. Diagrams represent a powerful narrative structure capable of taking the audience where photos or video cannot. According to Washington Post graphics editor Emily Chow, "Photographs can capture a moment or an emotion and set a scene. Words can do the same and draw a reader into a powerful narrative. Video has its strengths as well. But explanatory graphics and diagrams have the ability to illustrate connections and break down complex topics in a more digestible way."
