INTRODUCTION

When the National Health Service (NHS) came to a standstill in 2017, it was because of the effects of a global cyber security incident known as a ransomware attack. Exploiting security weaknesses in computer systems, criminals purposely installed malicious software that was designed to spread and infect servers and networks, desktops and laptops, tablets and smartphones, rendering them unusable by corrupting or encrypting the data held in them.
