Introduction

This chapter is principally directed to those who are not familiar with the English legal system and its practices and procedure. It focuses on five separate aspects of the English legal system and practice by way of background to the other chapters in this book, namely:

  • the court system;
  • the split profession and its relevance to international arbitration;
  • civil procedure;
  • the Arbitration Act 1996; and
  • European Community law.
