Challenges and Opportunities for the Electric Industry
The electric industry faces a wide range of challenges and opportunities. The concerns about environmental impacts, particularly global climate change, are leading to many changes in the technologies and the fuels used to generate electricity. In addition, the industry is taking aggressive steps to work with existing and potential customers to use electricity efficiently. Another initiative is called the Smart Grid. This effort is upgrading the transmission and distribution systems to allow the grid to serve customers in innovative ways. This chapter presents these important issues that will help shape the industry as it moves further into the 21st century.
