Imperative #3: Deficiency Gratification
A little over three years into his first tour of duty as an engineer at CivicActions, Andy Hawks left for a similar consulting organization one of his good friends had recently joined. This organization specialized in an open-source technology stack that Hawks was an expert in. It was filled with intelligent and talented people that Hawks admired. The projects were many and varied, so Hawks would never fear growing bored. And he enjoyed a good salary with equally good benefits. On paper, this organization had everything he needed. In practice, something was missing.
When he began to compare his experiences at this new organization to his experiences at CivicActions, a word came to mind: “ego-driven.” ...
