This chapter provides context and purpose for the mathematical activity you will undertake throughout the rest of the text. We address the nature of mathematics itself, along with mathematical problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical writing. A discussion of proof is initiated that will thread its way through the entire text. Suggestions for effective reading of a mathematics textbook are also offered.
