Introduction

Part III develops and applies a new procedure for formulating finite element stiffness matrices that is based on strain gradient notation. The approach is used to form the stiffness matrices for several elements. The modeling characteristics of the finite elements created using the new approach are evaluated during the formulation process. This a priori evaluation of the modeling characteristics of the individual elements is possible because of the transparent nature of the strain gradient notation.
