Error Estimation Based on Finite Difference Smoothing

Purpose of Lesson To improve the accuracy of Z/Z type error estimators by forming the smoothed solution using techniques from the finite difference method and to demonstrate the resulting improvements in the elemental and global error estimates.

The finite-difference-based smoothing is accomplished by overlaying finite difference templates on the finite element mesh and using the finite difference operators: first, to enforce the stress boundary conditions on the free boundaries and to satisfy the finite difference approximation of the governing differential equations on the fixed boundaries and, second, to extract the strains and, subsequently, find the stresses at the nodal points. ...
