Howard Stern’s humor notwithstanding, women, on average, still earn only 80 cents for every dollar a man earns. Although some of that difference can be explained by differences in age, education, years on the job, hours worked, and choice of occupations, somewhere between 11 and 40 percent of the difference cannot be accounted for by those factors. Some of the difference, no doubt, is the result of discrimination.
