What do the physician and the language teacher do in common when they meet their patients or clients for the first time? They both perform a diagnostic exam by asking a series of questions, making observations and ordering tests. It would never occur to the physician to prescribe a solution without the diagnostic; neither would the teacher recommend a specific course without first gauging the learner's relative mastery of the language.
