The reality of organizations today, because of their matrix structure, size or complexity, will place leaders (and non-leaders) in situations where they are not only required to lead and manage their teams or colleagues but also called upon to influence others in order to realize their objectives. Put another way, modern business has placed many leaders and other professionals in a position with huge responsibility and accountability but without the power to compel others to do the work. Those people might be peers. They might be found in other departments or on other teams. ...
