My competitive streak in academics began in Year 1. I was five years old and thought that school was a pretty fun activity and that given I didn't really have much choice in the matter of whether I went or not, I may as well enjoy it. At the end of the school year, one of my friends received the general excellence prize and I received a prize for “written language.” I was quite sure that I could be a strong academic student and could have won this vaguely determined “general excellence prize” and so as Year 2 began, I took my academics extra seriously.
