In an ideal world, the most brilliant higher education institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, and Yale would be represented by students whose demographics mirror the world. US residents represent a little over 4% of the world1 so one could imagine 4% of incoming students would come from the US. This, of course, varies enormously from reality and is unlikely to ever happen. These great institutions are, after all, US institutions. They receive substantial federal support and primarily serve US students. At Harvard University, approximately 85% of incoming freshmen are US students.2
