Although the main focus of this book covers sound and its associated equipment, the entertainment industry also relies on lighting to make the artists look good, or at least make them visible. Lighting is a specialized subject in itself. There are many fine books specifically about it but as it's such an important part of live events I'm going to cover at least some of the areas that are important.

Theater and concert lighting may differ but the principles used to control the various types of lights are generally the same; in fact, the same equipment is often used with the only variations being the lanterns (or luminaires) themselves.
