Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)

A public key infrastructure is important because it provides secure mechanisms for business and eCommerce transactions. It provides a community of trust. Through this community of trust, people are able to browse the web more securely, send secure emails, and download safe software. PKI does not solve all security issues, and it does not make all software safe or ensure that websites do not have malware embedded in them. However, it does provide an infrastructure to make the Internet safer, and it provides a level of security that is needed for a multilayer security system within an organization.
