Format, Genre, and Audience
In this chapter, we take a brief look at aspects of storytelling that shape the kind of performances we make. Format deals with the manner in which animation is distributed and consumed while genre places the product into categories. Both format and genre may be used as a way of identifying and reaching an audience. Audience is perhaps the single most important thing to bear in mind when developing a project and creating a performance within a narrative. It seems obvious perhaps but well worth mentioning nonetheless that we as animators seldom (if ever) make work for ourselves, we make it to be seen by a specific audience.
