Creating Forests, Domain Trees, and Child Domains

Any server running Windows Server 2008 can act as a domain controller. You configure a server as a domain controller by installing the necessary binaries for the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and then configuring AD DS using the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe).
