Managing and Maintaining Name Suffixes
Active Directory uses name suffix routing for routing authentication between domains and across forests that are joined by forest trusts. Within forests, global catalog servers resolve names to enable cross-domain authentication. When a forest trust is created, all unique name suffixes are routed by default to enable authentication across forests.
