The Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system hosts the latest implementation of Microsoft directory services, Active Directory. Originally released with Microsoft Windows 2000, Active Directory directory service has been refined and improved for release with Windows Server 2003.

In this book, the use of "Windows Server 2003" refers to those members of the family of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 products that provide and support Active Directory: Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; and Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition.
