8.1 Introduction

A communication network must be able to transport user traffic toward its targeted destination. The communication performance of a network can affect the satisfaction level of users. The ability to send information at high speeds demands low end-to-end delay. In addition, users would like to transmit a variety of information, such as data, audio, and video.
