Over the years security personnel have lost sight of their real purpose within an organization. Security should not be about implementing draconian controls and making it harder for users within an organization to perform their jobs, nor about implementing security for security’s sake. However, this is exactly what happens time and time again. In the worst cases, security effectively handcuffs its organization’s ability to innovate and change to meet dynamic and fast-changing market demands. At best, security reluctantly applies controls that oftentimes far exceed what is needed and spends inordinate amounts of limited financial resources on a shotgun blast, hoping one of the pellets hits the constantly moving business targets.
