The plan for the book came out of four dedicated years, from 2001 to 2004, at the National Science Foundation (NSF) as program director in the Division of Electrical and Communication Systems, where I was responsible for power and energy system program and also led the initiative called Electric Power Networks Efficiency and Security (EPNES), which is an interdisciplinary program aimed at unifying knowledge in economics, system theory, and power system and controls to solve the grand challenges of future electric power grids.
