Mattes
Mattes are similar to masks in that they crop out a portion of your image. Unlike masks, mattes are a separate layer from the thing they’re cropping. Therefore, they won’t necessarily travel with the cropped layer. They’re useful for things like windows, portals, and screens in which elements are only visible within a certain region.
To create a matte (and follow the rest of this section), make sure you’re in the Modes section of the timeline by selecting Toggle Switches/Modes at the bottom of the Timeline panel.
